LUCIN CUT-OFF TRAIN TRESTLE ON THE GREAT SALT LAKE, UTAH

Lucin Cut-off Train Trestle LUCIN CUT-OFF AT SUNSET: THE GREAT SALT LAKE, UTAH

The Lucin Cut-Off was a train trestle of the Southern Pacific railroad and went from Lucin, Utah to Ogden, Utah and was built across the Great Salt Lake in Utah.  Construction started in August 1902 and the trestle was put into service on March 8, 1904.  It saved  43 miles of travel distance  around the lake.  The curves and grades eliminated by this engineering feat saved enough power in moving such a train to carry a man 400 times between New York and San Francisco.

Dismantling Lucin Cut-off Train Trestle DISMANTLING OF THE LUCIN CUT-OFF TRAIN TRESTLE

The trestle started to go into a decline in use starting in the 1960’s and in 1993, dismantling and salvage of the trestle began.

Tuscany Pens was fortunate to obtain a limited amount of this re-claimed wood from the famous train trestle.  We have created a piece of history that can be held  in your hands and used everyday.

THE FLORENCE MILL                       MORMON WINTER QUARTERS PEN & OIL VIAL

A Settlement and its Mill

In the summer of 1846 a group of Mormons traveling west paused here along the banks of the Missouri River. They established a temporary city on Omaha and Otoe/Missouria tribal lands. They named their city Winter Quarters. Their path became known as the Mormon Trail.

Brigham Young, the group’s leader, decided to build a mill in Winter Quarters. A mill could process grain locally so that men and wagons need not travel to Missouri for supplies. Though Brigham Young was proud of their mill’s many contributions, it was intentionally temporary. The Winter Quarters gristmill was abandoned in 1848 as its stones and machinery were carted west to Salt Lake City.

Only two things remain today from Winter Quarters … the old pioneer cemetery and a few adz-hewn, randomly notched and pegged timbers within the Florence Mill.

The Florence Mill is Nebraska’s oldest mill.

Its job in the Twenty-first Century is to tell its stories.   Now own your piece of history.

This pen is made from some of the salvaged timbers from The Florence Mill - Mormon Winter Quarters.  It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and our lifetime warranty (NOTE: WARRANTY DOES NOT APPLY TO INK OR REFILLS).  Other pen styles available upon request.  Please email with your requirements for a quotation.

We also offer consecrated oil vials.  The wooden vial pictured is from The Florence Mill.  The white is made from casein. The vials have a brass inner tube and a glass vial that has a plastic stopper with attached dauber.

San Quentin State Prison Hospital

San Quentin State Prison is the oldest prison in California, having opened in 1852.   The prison hospital, which was built in 1885 in the Italianate style, was demolished to make way for a state-of-art healthcare facility that was opened in 2010.

The hospital was deconstructed in order to recycle the lumber.  The wood for this pen was donated by Crossroads Recycled Lumber (www.crossroadslumber.com).  In the process of deconstructing the prison hospital (so that its materials could be recycled by companies like Crossroads), workers uncovered the forgotten prison Dungeon, built by inmates as California’s first public work in 1854.
